Guessing Game: Best Kept Secrets of Paris

Can you guess where I took this picture?!?

HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW PARIS? THE CITY IS FULL OF SURPRISING PLACES!

Over the years I’ve become quite intimate with the back streets, local hang-outs and unexpected corners of the city… the better I get to know Paris, the more I love it. I share my favorite spots with my guests on our Best Kept Secrets and Off-the-Beaten-Path sojourns… and, I thought it would be fun for some of you to test your knowledge and get to know the city better.

Please post your guesses! I love seeing your ideas. 🙂

HINT: I think this one will stump you! It is an enchanting neighborhood garden along an abandoned train track. Honeybee hives, vegetables, flowers, little tables for picnicking… a true Parisian secret that most people in the city probably don’t even know about. I’ll give you a hint in case you want to do some Google search sleuthing to find the answer… it is north of Monmartre and South of Porte de Clignancourt.

HINT: This tree top zipline course is located in a special park that is in one of the two “lungs of Paris”. On the east and west side, the city is flanked by huge public parks (far larger than Hyde Park in London or Central Park in New York). The parks were at one time royal hunting forests and Napoleon III turned them over to the people. These large green spaces are considered to play an important roll in refreshing the air in Paris as city’s tend to produce high amounts of carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses like sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide which the trees and other plants convert into oxygen. The fun course pictured here is in an area of one of the woods that charges admission during special events (like open air music concerts). Can you guess where it is?

HINT: This is a picture of the courtyard of Paris’s fabulous free history museum which is often overlooked by tourists… do you know where it is?

HINT: This is an oasis in the city where you can step out of the hustle bustle and into another world… come for North African or Middle Eastern style sweets and mint tea or enjoy the hammam (a cousin of the sauna)! What few people know is that this place was built by the French government to thank the Muslims from the French colonies who fought for  France during WWI and it later became a refuge for Jews who were persecuted during WWII. I love coming here to treat myself and appreciate the history of compassion this place represents!

HINT: This arched bridge is right next to the last draw bridge in Paris. The draw bridge (you can see its wheels on the left side of the image) dates to 1885. Now this is one of the trendiest parts of Paris,in the banks of the banks of the canal are lined with young people picnicking and drinking in on warm summer evenings for a cheep night out… and you can rent small motor boats here to ride up and down the canal during the day (but they are not so cheap 😉 )!

HINT: This is another of Paris’ most famous sites… but if you haven’t taken climbed up the dome, then you may not recognize it. Despite it’s sordid history I fell in love with this mosque-like church on my first visit to Paris… and I still love going back early in the morning (before the throngs of tourists arrive) to enjoy the views over the city. Climbing up the 300 stairs in the spiral staircase to the roof gets me winded but it makes it sooooo rewarding when I finally reach the top. I only go right when they open so I can have the place more-or-less to myself… because I love taking my time, peeking down on the gargoyles and just sitting up in the dome for a bit to soak up the moment.

HINT: Don’t be fooled, this is in Paris not Kyoto!!! Where can you be transported to Japan without leaving the Paris? Think harder than the Guimet Asian Art Museum. This is further to the West in the city.
