A Postcard from Auvillar

Wish you were here!

Francis sends greetings from Auvillar, one of France’s “Most Beautiful Villages”. This village is one of the contenders for our Live-Like-a-Local Castle Sojourn… but it is too early to tell if it will make the cut: we have over a dozen places to visit and just space for five days worth of activities to fill on the final itinerary –so only the very best places will be selected. He tells us that the architecture is quite unusual here and has “a certain charm”.  The village is apparently very old -dating back to the Celtic period in 1 & 2 BC! The natural setting is a rocky outcrop overlooking the Garonne River. –I can’t wait to see it myself next Thursday.

Auvillar is  a stop on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route which has become a popular long-trek hike dating back to the Middle ages when pilgrims walked to the tomb of St. James the Apostle in Galicia Spain. These routes are now honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
